Adopt Creative Hobbies to Relieve Stress

Stress is an inevitable part of modern day life and avoiding it completely seems impossible. However, a certain amount of stress is actually required to achieve peak performance since it gets the adrenalin running. In times of stress the body prepares to perform at maximum performance levels and therefore becomes extremely efficient.

The problem, however, is not with stress itself but with the continuity of stress that we feel these days. The human body is more than adequate to handle momentary stress that arises from situations of emergency. Continued stress however, results in many health issues like a weakened immune system, psycho-physiological problems and emotional distress.

There are various ‘so-called’ causes of stress that may be different for different people. These include financial troubles, health, care for the elderly, emotional and relationship issues and work related pressures. Allowing these daily hassles to cause stress is purely in your own hands. If you take time off for yourself and allow yourself to relax in some way or another, you can adequately manage stress so that it does not become a major health concern.

Irrespective of the amount of stress that you may feel, there is nothing to worry about since there are various ways in which you can manage stress on your own. One of the easiest and most interesting ways of managing stress, however, is to adopt creative hobbies.

Hobbies are activities that you adopt that are not related to work. Hobbies take your mind off the tension and pressure that you might be feeling and allow you to dive into pleasurable activities that you enjoy. There are no bosses to look over your shoulder while you indulge in your hobby and no critical acquaintances or relatives that comment about your expertise at a craft.

While common hobbies like listening to music and reading a book take your mind off the events that are causing stress, other creative hobbies like pottery, sculpting, painting, embroidery, bonsai, floriculture, gardening and more provide you with a sense of satisfaction and self esteem. The pride that one feels when one looks at a well-tended flower bed blossoming with the season flowers cannot be described in words.

The self esteem that one gets from indulging in such activities helps in other areas as well. An individual with self esteem can hold his head high and perform at optimum levels in other areas of work as well. The confidence that comes with such activities is unparalleled.

Another benefit that accrues with adopting creative hobbies is that you can join hobby groups pertaining to the specific hobby. You can access these groups on the Internet or otherwise and then meet up occasionally to discuss the latest developments. Book reading groups, crafts groups and even kite flying or remote controlled airplane flying groups have found their way into the society these days. These groups are a great tool to make good friends with similar interests.

It is important to note, however, that while choosing a hobby you should not be too bothered about how good or bad you are with the hobby. If you look at adopting a hobby for external appreciation, you will probably add another stress event in your already stressed life. In case you feel uncomfortable sharing what you create with others, keep your hobby to yourself. You don’t really have to prove to the world that you are good at painting or embroidery.

Even as you adopt a creative hobby to keep your mind off the pressures of daily life for a few hours a day, make sure that you try and adopt a positive attitude towards everything. This is important because in most cases, it is not the event but our thinking that makes us tense and worked up about a specific situation.
